Anyone Working On Anything? Please Share Your Challenges.

This is my first full month working exclusively on an app. I have a team of Two programmers and  we are working on a web based app. This is a great move by the World Bank and as developers we hope to come up with relevant ideas which are practical.

Thank you Mr. Richard, The biggest problem so far was creating the concept. Our scope is quite large as we are were looking for a way to incorporate all the MDGs into one application and use the world bank data in the app without making it boring. In short, people rarely like looking at sheaves of statistical data, creating a reasonable balance between incorporating the MDGs, The data and still come up with an app which is interesting and can be used by anyone across al ages, professions and cultures was the challenge. We believe that we are on the right track and hope to submitt our entry by end year. Thank you sir.

Sounds like things are progressing well for your project! We really look forward to seeing what you have created.
We are aware that the scope of the MDGs does create many broad concepts as they highligh many of the key issues in development and poverty reduction.
When we started the competition we actually held an idea jam to get some ideas of what could be possible. You can watch a video from that event on the resources page and also see a list of the ideas at the link below:
    http://wbapps.ideascale.com/
All those ideas are free to be used as inspiration for people in the Apps for Development Competition.
Good luck with continuing on your project and we can't wait to see it!

my team and i have been working on an application since late october. One of the major challenges we faced was coming up with an idea to incorporate the world banks data into an application that would be helpful in realising the MDGs. And then there's the little problem of the datasets being incomplete in the areas we finally decided to focus on: Maternal Health and Child Mortality. We have already decided on a web based application and are currently in the process of designing and putting together all the pieces we need to make it work.

I'm writing to ask if writing a Windows Phone 7 mobile application, with a companion web site, can be entered in the competition.
    Best regards, Rob

Hi, I just found this site today and I have registered. I am working on a series of applications to be able to submit at least 3. I shall be posting my applications within the next few days one at a time as they finish.

    Hi
Everyone, sorry to have missed the last two posts here.
Robhelle - Yes I think your application could be entered in the competition. Do check the offical rules, but as a platform both the web and Windows Phone 7 are elgiable.
Athman - Great to hear you are going to take part in the competition! We look forward to seeing what you create.

Thanks Richard. I have been working on apps for development for years now and this competition is very interesting to me. I picked up on the idea of a CAPTCHA application from the forums ... I call it FACTCHA... and I should be subimitting it today or tomorrow :) as an entry for the competition.
Other apps I have done in the past include developing the MIS for the COMESA Regional Transit Guarantee Scheme, the COMESA Yellow Card Scheme, participated in the design of RADDEx customs data interconnectivity. Currently working at TradeMark East Africa on Single Windows for Trade, Integrated Border Management applications, a new way of handling Transit Bonds and Transport Observatories in the EAC Central and Northern Corridors in conjunction very closely with the WorldBank SSATP. Mostly web-based systems though. All these apps try to bring down the cost of transport in the EAC region hence improving competitiveness and addressing the poverty alleviation issue. The observatories are actually data collection and analysis mechanisms for non-tarriff and tarriff barriers to trade.
Are any of these apps eligible for the competition? :)

Sounds like you've been busy creating some really impressive apps! I look forward to seeing you submissions.
In terms of the eligibility of the other apps I would direct you to the official rules. The two rules of the Apps for Development competition is that apps must some some data from the World Bank Open Data Catalog and frame themselves in some way around the Millennium Development Goals. If you think any of your other apps fit this then please do enter them in the competition!
    Best,
Richard - Apps for Development Team
